Studying as a "Tonmeister" at the HFF / Filmuniversity Babelsberg

Since 2010 I am studying "Sound" - it used to be called "Tonmeister" before it was changed to BA and MA -  at the HFF in Potsdam, which now became the first filmuniversity in germany.

I started with the Bachelor degree and now I am a Master student. Due to the challenging qualifying examinations people ask me what we learn and how we improve our practical skills quite often, that's why I decided to make a short post about it.

There is a certain amount and sort of movies you have to compose the soundscape for and do the audio post production to be able to get your BA degree. Besides those mandatory movies you can use the studios and edit suites at the university for other projects, as long as they are not commercial. And that is the best thing about studying there: You can try things out, be curious, make mistakes, learn and if you are lucky enough to have a team that planned good, you may even be able to take the time you need for sound design and post production.

In the MA it is similar, but in my case it is different, as they let me work for games instead of films.

The movies that are created at the Fulmuniversität will then either be sent to festivals or will be broadcasted on TV. That way many of them will never be open to public and must not be uploaded.
That makes it difficult to show people what you were working on the last months.

But the Filmuniversität has an archive on their website, where you at least can get some information about all the projects and where you can search for people and find out in which movies they were involved in.
